Now that’s a good question, initially I would argue that many people are apathetic because they are ignorant, however being educated and aware may well also spawn apathy if you don’t like the choices you have when knowing the facts.
It seems to me that when it comes to real news and politics, those that are ignorant are sadly in the majority, and I am sure that of those, a fair few don’t actually know what apathy is, yet pertain to being apathetic.
On this note, I would suggest that ignorance and apathy mutually co-exist, ignorance is more widespread but apathy is not confined to the ignorant masses.
Ignorance will always be the worse of these two traits, because apathy can be a conscious and intelligent choice.
Ignorance leads to disrespect, closed minds and opens the door for all that you are ignorant to, to take control of your life without arguing the cause.
They do say that ignorance is bliss though, and perhaps for some people looking for a happy and fulfilled life it works to be ignorant, the trouble is if too many people bury their heads in the sand we become defenseless because we can’t see what’s going on around us.
If this site can turn one person from ignorant to aware I will feel quite accomplished in myself.
